A Message from the Founder

The Kolot Faculty

Kolot instructors include secular and religious men and women who represent a wide range of educational backgrounds and outlooks. 


Moti Bar-Or

  • Founder and Director of Kolot.
  • Directed Mishna and Talmud studies at the Pelech High School for Girls, Jerusalem.
  • Directed “Gesher” seminars in Safed.
  • Co-founded and directed “Elul”.
  • Studied at the Alon-Shevut hesder yeshiva for seven years.
  • Born in the United States, father of four.

Shai Zarchi

  • Third-generation member of Kibbutz Ginegar. 
  • Teaches Hebrew Literature and Poetry as well as Jewish Philosophy.  
  • Established the Midrasha for Jewish Education at Oranim and served as Pedagogical Director
  • Director of a creative staff for the development of Jewish rituals for family and community.
  • Chief editor of the Pesach Haggadah, “A Proposal for a Seder” (Yediot Achronot).
  • Established and directed the “Nigun” Beit Midrash for religious and secular men and women. 
  • Established the "Nigun–Halev" community at Nahalal and directs Kabbalat Shabbat ceremonies.

Rabbi Dov Berkovits

  • Co-founder and former educational director, Nesiyah.
  • Former director, Pardes Institute. 
  • Teacher and founding member at Elul.
  • Member of founding senior faculty at the Yakar Synagogue, Jerusalem.
  • Former research assistant to Rabbi Adin Steinzaltz.
  • Former director, Mila Institute for Creative Judaism.
  • Director, Beit-Av for creativity and renewal of the Torah.
  • Author of articles on Jewish ecology, teaching of Talmud and Judaism and art.
  • Graduate, University of Chicago and Yeshiva University with degrees in Philosophy and Jewish History.
  • Born in England, raised in Australia and the United States; currently resides in Shilo.

Baruch Brener

    • Rabbi, actor and voice artist.
    • BA from Nisan Nativ Acting Studio.
    • Worked with Polish director Yezzi Grottowski in Italy.

Devora Busheri

  • Secular facilitator at Kolot from its inception.
  • Former instructor of English literature, Hebrew University.
  • Translator of Jewish literature into English.
  • Translator of American literature into Hebrew.
  • MA in English Literature and Philosophy , Hebrew University.
  • Studied at Elul and worked on curriculum committee.

Yehoshua Engelman

  • Rabbi.
  • Teacher in the Havruta Beit Midrash at the Hebrew University.
  • Former director, Yakar, UK.
  • Composes, produces and performs on albums of popular Jewish music.
  • Completing MA in Psychotherapy.

Shlomo Fox

  • Teaches in the education department, Hebrew Union College.
  • Educational director, IDF project at Beit Morasha.
  • Educational counselor, Yahalom Parent-Child Learning program.
  • Founded and directed Ramah Noam Camp of the Mesorati Movement.
  • Teaches in the Beit Midrash for Jewish Studies of the Schechter Institute
  • Teaches in the Mevasseret, Beit Shmuel and Ranana Batei Midrash of the Conservative Movement.
  • MA in Jewish Thought, Hebrew University.
  • Rabbinic Ordination, Conservative Movement.

Shmuel Herr

  • Graduate and teacher, Hartman Institute.
  • Ph.D. student in Talmud and Comparative Religions, Hebrew University.
  • BA in Talmud and Classics.

David Liberman

  • Founder and teacher, Makor Haim High School (headed by Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz).
  • Former director of Elul and coordinator of its Beit Midrash .
  • Joined Kolot faculty in 2000. Currently serves as Educational Coordinator for the Lay Leadership Program and head of the Kolot Beit Midrash.
  • Teaches Talmud at Havruta, the Hebrew University Beit Midrash.
  • Studied at Yeshivat HaKotel, a hesder yeshiva in Jerusalem’s Old City combining Torah studies and army service.
  • Resides in Shiloh with his wife and four children.
  • Currently completing MA in Literature and Talmud at the Hebrew University.

Ruhama Weiss

  • BA in Talmud and Jewish thought, Hebrew University.
  • M.A. in Jewish Studies, Seminary of Judaic Studies in Jerusalem. 
  • Former Director of Bet Midrash for adults, Bet Shmuel in Jerusalem.
  • Ph.D. candidate, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Melton Center for Jewish Education in the Diaspora.
