The Program and its Goals

Tehuda is a Beit Midrash that helps students transform their leadership skills into an active force for societal improvement and communal work. This program is training the Israeli professionals who will assume key roles in the leadership of the Jewish renaissance in Israel.

Tehuda was established by Kolot and the Midrasha in Oranim, with the aim of creating a national Beit Midrash for renewing the living connection between Jewish sources and the pressing issues in Israeli society. Other Batei Midrash across Israel continue to join the project.

The Syllabus

Within the Tehuda framework, men and women explore connections between their in-depth learning and current social issues.  Weekly studies are divided into three tracks:

  • The Torah track – Studies centering on an annual theme which connects textual issues with the reality of life in Israel
  • The Kedusha (sanctity) track: Learning about Shabbat, festivals, life cycle events, and designing related ceremonies for family and community.
  • The Chesed (benevolence) track: Theory and action for contributing to the community and Israeli society.
  • The Fellows

Developing a dialogue between Israelis of different backgrounds is a key element in creating an authentic, multi-cultural renewal of Judaism in Israel. Female and male Tehuda participants are selected from a range of backgrounds:  secular, religious, new immigrants, residents of development towns, etc.    A B.A. in Jewish Studies or similar field is a necessary criterion for acceptance. Applicants without an appropriate background are required to complete necessary prerequisites.

Zafi Tzaba, is a Ph.D. student in Hebrew Literature at Tel Aviv University; a teacher at the Lockai Center for Jewish Studies at the Leo Baeck Institute in Haifa and facilitator of its Beit Midrash for Educational Leadership:

“I travel for hours every week to get to Tehuda, because the encounter with the text widens and enriches my horizons.  The text becomes an axis for new encounters. It brings out active and creative thought and opportunities to engage in dialogue that is relevant and important to Israeli society.

“I view my commitment to social action as a way of repaying my debt to society. The experience of taking action gives a broader perspective to my text study and anchors it to real life.  The learning at Tehuda gives me the appropriate tools for the social and cultural reckoning that we must undergo before we aspire to become a more ethical society, with its own unique and cultural characteristics.”
